GammaRay is available both stand-alone and integrated in Qt Creator and allows both inspection of Qt applications right from the start as well as attaching to a running Qt application later on. GammaRay should not be missing in any Qt developer’s toolbox. Unlike the debugger, GammaRay understands those internal structures and can present them in a meaningful way. It provides easy ways of navigating through the complex internal structures you find in some Qt frameworks, such as QGraphicsView, model/view, QTextDocument, state machines and more. GammaRay augments your conventional debugger by providing domain-specific debugging aids on a much higher level. GammaRay uses injection methods to hook into an application at runtime and provide access to a wide variety of interesting information. GammaRay is a tool for examining the internals of a Qt application and to some extent also manipulate it. If this is what you value most, you'll appreciate Sputnik.įigure 8: Sputnik is a no-frills yet slick desktop RSS aggregator. So, basically, Sputnik has three main things going for it: simplicity, slick interface, and speed ( Figure 8). Because it's a strictly standalone application, Sputnik doesn't offer synchronization functionality. Sputnik does a great job of rendering RSS articles in readable form, but you can't customize settings like fonts, font size, line spacing, overall theme, and so on. Unfortunately, you can't adjust the width of the reading area, so a lot of screen space on the right is wasted. The aggregator features a streamlined interface consisting of the sidebar with RSS feeds and the reading area in the middle. ![]() When you update feeds, Sputnik stores the fetched articles locally, so you can read them offline. If you opt to keep tagged articles permanently, you can use the tagging functionality to save RSS articles and find specific items later. ![]() Better still, Sputnik lets you organize feeds into categories and assign tags to individual RSS articles. The aggregator is intentionally light on features, but essential functionality such as feed import and export, keyboard navigation, and sharing is present and accounted for. Installing and upgrading Sputnik on Linux is a matter of downloading and running the latest. Although this RSS aggregator is relatively new, it shows a lot of promise. If you need a user-friendly and lightweight RSS reader, then you might want to take a look at Sputnik. When it comes to standalone desktop RSS aggregators, you have plenty of choices: Akregator, QuiteRSS, RSSOwl, and many others. ![]()
